Why do we bother? Newton’s Third Law tells us that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. While this explains the natural world, it does not fully address the supernatural. I’m not referring to fantastical powers, like flying, incredible strength, lightning speed, or laser vision, but to something much more significant: the loving intervention of our God—a power beyond human limitations.

The readings for the 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time remind us that opposition is inevitable. Jeremiah was not accepted as a prophet, nor was Jesus welcomed in his hometown. Even St. Paul’s beloved reflection on love, often heard at weddings, emphasizes that love bears, believes, hopes, and endures. These are the actions of those who struggle, focusing on the Lord’s ultimate victory rather than immediate success.

As we summarize Jesus’ Method from Enkindle Catholic—Connect, Captivate, Catechize, and Co-mission—I invite each parishioner to assess their faith honestly. Do I make space and time for the Lord, allowing him to feed and nurture me? Am I holding myself accountable for deepening my relationship with Christ? Do I recognize the gifts God has given me, and am I responding to his call to serve others? Lastly, how do we, as a parish family, support the ministries of Christ that bring mercy and love to those in need through us?

The Annual Appeal for Catholic Ministries lets us put our faith into action. The Archdiocese relies on the generosity of parishioners like you to carry out Christ’s mission and make a meaningful difference in our communities. This year, our parish has set a goal of raising $112,961. Last year, 238 donors contributed, with an average gift of $474.63. While some can give generously, we recognize that it may not be feasible for everyone. That’s why I hope we can increase participation to 400 gifts or pledges this year. This goal is achievable, considering there are over 600 actively engaged families in our parish—and many more connected to our community. Together, we can create a lasting impact.

Your generosity makes a tremendous difference. Through the Appeal, 40% of our parish’s rebates are allocated to St. Veronica in Baltimore, where they are creating a positive impact in Cherry Hill. Another 40% supports Our Lady of the Nativity in Haiti, where Fr. Murat and his parish have established not just one but two Catholic schools in nearby towns, transforming lives through education.

The remaining 20% is divided equally: 10% supports ChristLife evangelization programs like Discovering Christ, Following Christ, and Sharing Christ, which have brought renewal and strength to many in our parish and beyond; the other 10% provides tuition assistance at OLPH School, ensuring that more parish families have access to the gift of a Catholic education.

Every dollar given extends God’s work in ways both seen and unseen. Please join me in praying for the success of this Appeal and consider the gift you can offer. Then, stretch just a bit further; sacrificial giving bears great fruit. Your contribution, no matter the size, helps bring the light of Christ to others.
